Teens in trouble at school

Teenagers don't always do the right thing. If your son or daughter is facing a school stand-down or suspension (see below for details), it's important you know what's happening.

  • For a stand-down, you can ask to meet the Principal, or they may ask to meet you. Your teenager can attend, as can a support person if you want one.
  • For a suspension, the school Board of Trustees needs to ask you to meet with them. Be sure to do this, ideally accompanied by a support person. The Board should send you details of the meeting and suspension. At least 48 hours before the meeting, you should also be sent the Principal's report. For advice before the meeting, contact Parents Legal Information Line free on 0800 499 488.

Helpful tips

  • Plan what you will want to say in the meeting.
  • Take a support person who knows your teenager well and can speak up for them. It could be a sports coach, family friend, teacher aide or guidance counsellor.
  • If you think the right process has not been followed, contact your local Ministry of Education office.
