What's the law with learner licences?

  • Before your teenager learns to drive on the road, they must get a learner licence from a driver licensing agent.
  • They need to fill out an application form, produce ID and evidence of their address, have an eyesight check and pass a theory test.
  • A 21-day temporary licence will be issued for using until the learner licence is sent out in the mail, usually within 2-3 weeks.
  • Learner licence conditions include:
    • Your teenager must not drive on their own. A supervisor must be in the front passenger seat. This person must have a current full New Zealand driver licence which they've held for at least two years.
    • 'L' (learner) plates must be displayed on the front and rear of the car.
    • Your teenager must carry their learner licence at all timeswhen driving.
