What's safe to eat?

Healthy eating keeps you feeling good and gives your baby the essential nutrients it needs. You need foods containing protein to help baby grow, such as: meat, fish, chicken and eggs (make sure all these are well cooked); milk, cheese, nuts, beans and peas.

Avoid raw meat, fish, chicken and eggs, especially in minced products like sausages and burgers. Avoid soft cheese and pâté. Avoid sushi and salad bars. These uncooked foods can contain listeria, a harmful bacteria.

Drink plenty of liquid, including water. It is best to limit caffeine, found in coffee, tea and cola drinks.

The Ministry of Health provides good advice on eating for healthy pregnant women.
