Will I be charged for care?
For New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, most maternity care is free.
You may be charged for:
- some antenatal or childbirth education classes
- some tests at a private laboratory
- an ultrasound scan that is not medically indicated.
Private obstetricians and private maternity hospitals charge a fee. If you are not a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, you will be charged for all pregnancy, labour and birth care.
