When should I start discussing drugs?
Children can understand the broader issues of drugs from about the age they start school. Take advantage of natural situations, such as discussing moderation and choices when the child sees adults drinking alcohol.
Focus on the positive – how good it is to stay fit and healthy. Whenever your child asks about drugs, try and give them a clear and accurate answer. Don't ignore their questions.
Chances are your child will experience the DARE Foundation programme at school. At this time, discuss the issues with your child.
Your child will be better prepared to handle the issues around drug use if they feel secure, confident and positive. At all times, help them to be responsible and think for themselves. Applaud them when they stand up and make their own positive decisions. Encourage them to love being fit and healthy, right from the earliest age.
The DARE Foundation offers New Zealand designed programmes that challenge children, parents and their communities to develop skills in decision-making, assertiveness, responsibility and esteem.
