What should I do to stop bullying?

  • Take bullying at all ages seriously.
  • Talk to your child/teenager about the bullying. Don't brush it off.
  • Tell them it isn't their fault. Never suggest they are weak for being bullied. Don't let anyone else do so.
  • Talk calmly about what to do to handle the problem — suggest they ignore the bully and walk away.
  • Help plan ways to avoid the situation, such as going home a different way or staying with a group; although they should not have to change their life to avoid bullying
  • Get your child or teenager involved in other activities, such as sport, dance classes or music lessons — great for building confidence and new friendships.
  • At school, discuss the problem with the principal, guidance counsellor or dean.
  • If you think the bullying is serious contact the Police.
