Appropriate Internet use

The Internet can be a powerful learning, communications and entertainment tool. Most young people use it to find information, play games, and chat to friends.

But there are risks, such as unsuitable websites, or contact with people you may not trust or be aware of. Children should be told the dangers and how to deal with them. It may be helpful for you to set family/whānau rules and take steps to support online safety.

Helpful tips

  • Make sure your family/whānau all know basic online safety
  • Check the monthly phone and internet bills
  • Consider software to filter which sites can be visited, and consider having passwords
  • Set up the home computers so you can see when and why it is being used
  • Regularly use the internet responsibly with your child – this takes the mystery away
  • Talk to your children about what they do online
  • Agree on rules for internet use in the home
  • Limit time spent online.
