What is an open adoption?

An 'open' adoption is where birth parents and adoptive parents meet and exchange identifying information at the time of the adoption and make an arrangement that allows the child to have contact with their birth parents as they grow up. These arrangements are flexible and can be adapted as the child gets older and begins to have a say in how much contact they want.
